A deepfake voice call faking a family emergency? How to respond

Scammers now clone a loved one's voice to fake an accident or arrest and demand urgent money. Here is how to check it is real before you pay anything.

A call comes in and it sounds exactly like your child, your parent, or a close friend. They are crying, they are in trouble, and they need money right now. This is one of the newest scams in India, built on AI that can copy a voice from a few seconds of audio taken from social media. The voice can be fake even when it sounds completely real.

Do not send money on a panicked call, no matter how real the voice sounds. Urgency and fear are the tools of this scam. Pause and check first.

How to check it is really them

  1. Hang up and call the person back yourself on their known number. A cloned voice cannot answer their real phone.
  2. If you cannot reach them, call another family member or friend who can confirm where they are.
  3. Ask a question only the real person would know, and do not accept a rushed excuse for why they cannot answer it.
  4. Never send money or share an OTP or a bank detail during the call itself.
Agree a simple family safe word now, before anything happens. If a caller claiming to be family cannot say it, you know at once that the call is fake.

If you already sent money

Act fast. Call 1930, the national cyber-crime helpline, so your bank can try to freeze the money before it moves. File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in and tell your own bank it was fraud. Save the call details, the number, and any messages, because they help the investigation.

Reduce your risk

Scammers pull voice and video from public posts. Consider making your social media private, and be careful about videos where you or your family speak on camera. The less audio of your voice is public, the harder it is to clone.

Common questions

Can a scammer really copy my family member's voice?

Yes. Modern AI tools can clone a voice from a short clip taken from social media or a voice note. The copy can sound convincing, which is why you should always verify through a separate call before acting.

How do I know if a distress call is a deepfake?

Hang up and call the person back on their real number, or reach another relative who can confirm where they are. Ask something only the real person would know. A fake caller will push you to act fast so you do not check.

What is a family safe word?

A simple word or phrase your family agrees on in advance. If someone calls claiming to be family and asking for urgent money, you ask for the safe word. A scammer will not know it.

I already paid a fake emergency call. What now?

Call 1930 straight away so your bank can try to freeze the money, and file on cybercrime.gov.in. Tell your bank it was fraud and save the call number and any messages for the investigation.
