Losing money to a UPI scam is frightening. Take one breath. You can still act, and acting fast is what works best. The four steps below are in the right order, so start at the top and work down.
1. Call 1930
1930 is the national cyber-crime helpline. It is free and open all day and night. When you call, they work with your bank to try and freeze the money in the scammer's account. Before you call, keep your bank name, your account number, and the transaction details in front of you so you do not lose time hunting for them.
2. Call your bank's fraud number
Tell your bank the transaction was fraud and that you never approved it. Ask them to freeze your account and block any more transfers. Ask for a complaint reference number and write it down. If you are not sure which number to call, the fraud line for most major banks is listed on our resources page.
3. File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in
This is the official government portal, also called NCRP. Filing here creates the legal record that every later step depends on. You will get a complaint ID. Save it carefully, because your bank and the ombudsman will ask for it later.
4. Raise a dispute in your UPI app
Open the app you paid from, whether that is GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm, go to the help section, and raise a dispute on the transaction. Each app has to respond within 24 hours. If they turn you down, you can take the same complaint to NPCI, the body that runs UPI.
What happens after you report
Once your complaint is in, the bank has ten working days to look into a valid case. If the money was frozen in time, you may see it back within a few days. If it was already moved on, recovery takes longer and depends on the police and the bank working together. Keep your complaint ID safe and follow up every few days.
Never pay anyone who promises to recover your money for a fee. That is a second scam aimed at people who have already lost money once. The real helpline, 1930, never charges you a rupee.
Common questions
How long does a UPI fraud refund take?
There is no fixed answer. If 1930 and your bank freeze the money quickly, some people see it back within a few days. If the money was already withdrawn, it can take weeks or longer, and it depends on the police tracing it. Reporting in the first hour gives you the best chance.
What if I call 1930 and cannot get through?
Keep trying, and at the same time file online at cybercrime.gov.in so your complaint is on record. The phone call and the online complaint feed into the same system, so doing both is better than waiting on one.
I sent money to the wrong UPI number by mistake. Is that the same thing?
It is a little different, but the first steps overlap. Raise a dispute in your app and contact your bank. If the person who received it refuses to return it, you can still file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.
Can I still get my money back if I shared my UPI PIN?
It is harder, because the bank may argue you approved the payment. You can still report it and make your case, and if the bank does not help, you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman for free. It is always worth trying.
