Lost money to a task based job scam? Here is what to do

If a part time job offer paid you for a few simple tasks and then asked you to put in your own money for bigger rewards, you have run into a task based scam. It is one of the fastest growing frauds in India, and it is designed to feel like easy work before it turns. If you have realised what is happening, stop now and report it.

Stop sending money immediately. Once the scam asks you to deposit your own cash to earn more, every further payment is lost. Do not try to win back what you already put in by paying again.

How to spot the task scam

You get a message on WhatsApp or Telegram offering easy money for liking videos, rating hotels, or completing small online tasks.
The first few tiny payouts are real, so you trust it.
You are moved to a group where you do prepaid tasks that need you to deposit your own money first.
The balance on their app grows, but when you try to withdraw, you are told to complete more paid tasks or clear a fee.

What to do right now

Stop all payments and leave the task group, but take screenshots before you go.
Call 1930 so your bank can try to freeze the money in the receiving accounts.
File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in and save the complaint ID.
Report the fraud to your bank and ask them to flag the accounts and UPI IDs you paid.
Block and report the phone numbers that contacted you.

No genuine employer ever asks you to pay money to receive your earnings. If a job needs a deposit before it pays out, it is a scam every time.

Keep your evidence

Save the job offer message, the group name and link, the app or website you used, the profiles that recruited you, and every payment reference and UPI ID you sent money to. This is what makes your complaint strong.

Do not fall for a recovery fee

After a task scam, some people are contacted by a so called recovery agent who promises the money back for an upfront fee. That is another scam. The only free and official route is 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in.

The small early payouts are bait to make you trust the group and start depositing your own money. Once you do, the payouts stop and you are asked for more. The early cash came from other victims, not from real work.

I deposited money for tasks. Can I recover it?

Report it as fast as possible on 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in. If the money is still sitting in the receiving account, the bank may be able to freeze it. The sooner you report, the better your chances.

They are still messaging me to complete more tasks. What do I do?

Stop replying and do not pay anything more. Take screenshots of the messages, then block and report the numbers. Continuing only loses you more money.
